MARC CHAGALL Marc
Chagall was a Russian-born French painter and designer, distinguished for his
surrealistic inventiveness. He is recognized as one of the most significant
painters and graphic artists of the 20th century. His work treats subjects in a
vein of humor and fantasy that draws deeply on the resources of the
unconscious. Chagall’s personal and unique imagery is often suffused with
exquisite poetic inspiration. 1887 Marc Chagall is born July 6 in Vitebsk,
Russia. 1906 Finishes school. Studies painting in Vitebsk,
then moves to St. Petersburg. 1908 Enters the school of painting of Leon Bakst,
where he studied until 1910. 1909 Visits Vitebsk, meets Bella Rosenfeld who
later becomes his wife 1910 Chagall goes to Paris. 1911-12 Exhibits for the first time at the Salon
des Independants, Paris. 1914 Visits Vitebsk at the time of the outbreak of
World War I. 1915 Marries Bella July 25 in Vitebsk. Works and
exhibits in Russia. 1922 Leaves Russia for Berlin. 1923 Returns to Paris. 1925 Vollard commissions Chagall to illustrate the
Fables of La Fontaine. 1926 First exhibition in New York City. 1930-31 Vollard suggests that Chagall illustrate
the Bible. 1941 At the invitation of the Museum of Modern
Art, New York, Chagall travels to the
United States. 1944 Bella dies on September 2. 1945 Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art,
New York City, and in Chicago. 1950 Settles in Vence, France. 1952 Marries Valentine (Vaya) Brodsky on July 12. 1964 Journey to New York City for inauguration of
Peace window at the United Nations, New York City. 1965 Murals for the new Metropolitan Opera at
Lincoln Center, NY 1966 Moves to St. Paul-de-Vence, France. 1969 Foundation
stone laid for Museum of Biblical Message, Nice. 1973 Returns to Russia for the first time
since1922. 1977 Awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion
d’Honneur. 1985 Chagall dies March 28 in St. Paul-de-Vence,
